Incident Report Description

691 Scarlett Road is wood-frame church, one of the last (if not THE last) in Toronto. Built originally in Malton in 1895, it was physically relocated to what was then Etobicoke, in 1923. Over the years it has changed names several times, and was a key fixture in both Malton and Etobicoke history.

The owners of the property, citing expensive upkeep, applied in Spring of 2010 to demolish the church, depsite knowing that it was a heritage property when they acquired it. Etobicoke York Community Council denied the application but without prejudice to the owners, meaning that if they are unable to find a new use for the property they can re-apply to demolish without additional cost.

ADDITIONAL REPORTS AND DISCUSSION   (Add)

David (Aug 4 2010)

At Noon, Saturday August 14, there will be a public meeting at 691 Scarlett to discuss the future of the building. The owner/developer now sounds somewhat interested in implementing a preservation strategy, referring to it as a "cultural heritage site," but they haven't revealed any of the details yet.
